Bruce Gao
MD, FRCSC
Dr. Bruce Gao, MD, FRCSC, is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Urology at the University of California, Irvine. He has subspecialty training in laser prostate enucleation, laparoscopic and robotic surgery, and kidney stone surgery. His clinical expertise encompasses the full spectrum of advanced minimally invasive urologic procedures, including Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP), percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), complex ureteroscopy, and robotic-assisted renal surgery using both single- and multi-port approaches.
Dr. Gao specializes in Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP), an advanced laser surgery that has become the gold standard for treating urinary
symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate. Unlike older procedures such as TURP, HoLEP removes the entire
obstructing tissue regardless of prostate size, offering patients more complete relief, fewer complications, shorter catheter time, and the lowest risk of
retreatment. With subspecialty training and extensive experience, Dr. Gao provides HoLEP safely and effectively, helping men return to normal urinary function and quality of life. In addition to BPH treatment, Dr. Gao cares for patients with kidney and urinary stones. I offer the full spectrum of options — from ureteroscopy (URS) for smaller stones, to shockwave lithotripsy (SWL), to percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) for large or complex stones.
Dr. Gao also emphasizes stone prevention counseling, so patients are less likely to experience recurring stones. He treats kidney tumors and cancers with robotic and laparoscopic surgery, focusing on kidney-sparing procedures such as partial nephrectomy whenever possible. These minimally invasive approaches reduce pain, shorten recovery, and preserve healthy kidney tissue. His practice also includes office-based procedures and diagnostics — such as cystoscopy, uroflowmetry, prostate evaluation, and urine testing — allowing patients to receive comprehensive, streamlined care. Whether addressing BPH, stones, or kidney tumors, Dr. Gao’s commitment is to deliver state-of-the-art, minimally invasive treatments with a focus on safety, durability, and patient-centered outcomes.
